Mentoring allows students to interact with volunteer members to to find out more about working with real world professionals to gain a first hand perspective on the status of the job market or industry in which they wish to work.

Capstone Career Connection mentoring is available to all University of Alabama alumni, including Masters and Doctoral level. University of Alabama students and alumni need your help in deciding what career fields to pursue and are interested in your real world advice. Deciding to be a career mentor requires a minimal time commitment.

Role of a Mentor

The role of the mentor in Capstone Career Connection is to give advice to students and alumni about specific career fields. A mentor does not have to initiate contact with students and alumni, but does agree to do the following:

  • Discuss with the student or alumni their career goals and how to achieve them
  • Describe your job history and current responsibilities
  • Help identify skills that are relevant in your career field or organization
  • Suggest other networking opportunities such as community groups, service organizations, professional organizations, alumni groups, etc
  • Describe the changes taking place in your field, typical career tracks, and projected future trends
  • Share any materials that might help the student better understand your field
  • Suggest ways that the student could get additional experience / exposure in your field
